How long do lithium forklift batteries usually last?

Most lithium forklift batteries will keep going strong for 5 to 10 years. You can expect around 6,000 full charge cycles over their lifetime. But the actual lifespan depends on a few things—like how often you use the battery, how you charge it, the quality of the battery itself, and the conditions where you run your forklifts.

Charging habits matter. Try not to overcharge or drain the battery all the way to empty. It’s best to keep the charge between about 20% and 80%.

Temperature plays a role too. Extreme heat or cold will shorten the battery’s life. Ideally, keep it in a space between 68°F and 77°F (20–25°C).

How hard you run it counts. Heavy loads and constant use will wear it out faster.

And a little care goes a long way. Regularly check the battery and make sure the BMS (Battery Management System) is working properly. That way, you can catch small problems before they turn into big ones.

Do forklifts use lithium batteries?

Yes. A lot of forklifts now run on lithium batteries. They’re faster to charge, last longer, and don’t need as much upkeep. Each battery comes with an advanced management system that keeps it safe and efficient. Over time, this can really cut down your operating costs.

Should I choose lithium or lead-acid batteries for my forklift?

It depends on your needs.

Lithium batteries cost more upfront— usually about 40–60% more than lead-acid. But over about 8 years, you’ll often spend 50% less overall if you run multiple shifts. They’re lighter and smaller, hold a steady charge, and last a lot longer. They also need almost no maintenance.

Lead-acid batteries are cheaper to buy— around one-third the price of lithium. They can be fine for smaller warehouses that don’t run forklifts all day. But they’re heavier, need regular upkeep, and won’t last as long. You’ll probably have to replace them more often. On the upside, lead-acid batteries have well-established recycling options.

If you look at the big picture, lithium is often the better investment, especially if your forklifts are busy day in and day out.

How do I take care of lithium forklift batteries to help them last?

Taking care of these batteries doesn’t take much, but it pays off. You can often double or triple their lifespan compared to lead-acid. Here are some simple tips:

Charge smart. Use the right charger. Avoid leaving the battery fully charged or fully drained for long periods. The sweet spot is keeping it between 20% and 80%.
Keep it clean and dry. Wipe down the case and connectors. Store the battery in a cool, well-ventilated spot away from moisture and heat.
Check your BMS regularly. Once a week, look at the system data. Watch for unusual cell voltage differences (over 0.3V), overheating (above 113°F/45°C), or any alarms.
Mind the temperature. Best operating range is about 60–77°F (15–25°C). Avoid leaving it in blazing sun or freezing cold.
Inspect every six months. Have a technician check the connectors, cooling system, and BMS software. If the battery health drops below 80% or you notice it losing range, start planning for replacement.
